Intensive Couples Counseling Retreats in SC and NC

Retreats offered in Charleston, Columbia and Greenville, SC. In NC, Asheville, Charlotte and Wilmington.

With 40 years experience, I have seen the intensive weekend counseling approach be more effective than weekly sessions. The weekend allows a couple to stay focused long enough to make significant progress whatever their challenges. The weekend approach is often just way more convenient than weekly appointments when one considers the time it takes getting to and from, time off from work and arranging help with childcare. Simply put, it allows a couple to cover more ground in a shorter period of time. Many have said that having tried both the weekly and weekend approach they much prefer the weekend approach and believe it was the best thing they ever did for their marriage.

Prior to booking your retreat we schedule a ‘Meet and Greet’ using ZOOM/FaceTime online video interview. When ready to schedule the retreat, you will be invoiced for the retreat which is not considered ‘booked’ until payment is made.

After ‘booking’ the retreat you will be emailed the links to do the assessments prior to the retreat.

The Gottman Relationship Checkup or the Prepare/Enrich Inventory must be completed at least a week before the retreat to give me time to review it before your retreat.

What to expect on a weekend counseling retreat:

  • Intensives are done one person or couple at a time, there are no group or multi-couple settings.
  • The 16 or 18 hours of counseling can be used in a variety of time frames depending on your circumstances and needs.
  • Intensives can be done in person or virtual or a combination of both.

The counseling sessions in these locations take place in the comfortable sitting/living room of an upscale 2 room suite. This suite also serves as my personal accommodations for the duration of the retreat.

IT WAS GREAT TO SORT THROUGH ALL OUR ISSUES IN ONE WEEKEND.

We were unsure if we were going to make it. We needed to discuss living arrangements, baby and family, habits, financial togetherness. We had tried couples therapy before. Did it 1x a month but it was not what we needed.

Kent was great! Understanding, extremely knowledgeable, wise and able to stop us when we were not communicating correctly. We learned how to communicate through our differences.

It was great to sort through all our issues in one weekend.

We are comfortable communicating together, we feel closer, and I am falling back in love with my spouse.
Do this it’s worth it!

KENT MADE US LISTEN TO EACH OTHER

Our marriage was strained, headed for divorce. We had never been to couples counseling. We had been to a therapist 2 years previously and had no success.

Kent’s process revealed issues and lead to streamlined coaching. Kent made us listen to each other and rationalize our thoughts, he was patient and very helpful.

The weekend approach gave us the time to really dive into our issues and face each other’s concerns. We are communicating, showing affection and have had no conflict.

We recommitted to each other, learned how to deal with conflict and a better way to communicate with each other.
I would say if you really want to save your relationship it is worth the time and investment.

MY HUSBAND WAS PUSHED TO TALK THROUGH THE SITUATION INSTEAD OF WITHDRAWING

I was ready to contact a divorce lawyer. My husband was having a 3-year affair and we had severe social problems. But I wanted to be able to tell my kids one day that I did everything I could. Didn’t have time for typical weekly therapy. My husband refused therapy up until now.

I wondered begore we started if I could endure the pain of talking about his affair. Wondering if I could hold it together emotionally through the sessions. Worried how my husband would act.

My husband made the decision to end the affair and try again. Kent was able to confirm my guess that my husband has Asperger’s. With the third person in the room, my husband talked to me for the first time in years.

I wanted to use a male therapist because I though he would help me decode my husbands’ thoughts and feeling and I wanted my husband to feel like somebody was on his side.

The affair was discussed and dealt with. My husband was pushed to talk through the situation instead of withdrawing. Kent was able to introduce concepts that my husband remembered when we got home and repeated.
I would say, this is a great thing to do especially when it seems you’re reaching the end of the relationship.

YOU HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE AND EVERYTHING TO GAIN.

My husband found Kent. We were at a breaking point in our marriage and I was ready to throw in the towel. He was not and made a conscious effort to find us a good therapist. We really liked Kent and felt he understood our issues.

We had no hesitations. I knew we needed this to make our marriage better. It started the day after our 38th anniversary. Not a time to give up. We made it this far.

Kent was easy going, stayed on point. He made us feel relaxed about talking about things.

I now have a better understanding of how my spouse felt. We are listening to issues without judgment and now know what our love languages are (both of us a ‘feeling loved’), which we were not doing. We are kinder to each other. Forgiving of our mistakes.

I’d say just do it. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

I REALIZED PERHAPS FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE HOW MUCH THIS RELATIONSHIP MEANS TO ME

Our marriage was rocky, near the breaking point. Intimacy and communication were huge stumbling blocks. It was a sexless marriage, little communication beyond careers, kids and puppies. The previous couples therapy was on a limited one hour per week basis, it did little if anything for us.

Einstein’s theory of insanity required we do something different. Also the qualifications and experience along with Gottman techniques, I had no reluctance. I knew it was our last shot.

Work with Kent was terrific: easygoing approach but always with a plan in mind. We learned a lot about each other in a very brief but highly efficient weekend. I am able to see fear and pain where once I saw only contempt and anger. I realize perhaps for the first time in my life how much this relationship means to me and how far I am willing to go to preserve it. It has given us the freedom and skills to express real vulnerability and desire. Worth every penny. I would say this could literally save your relationship.

I DID NOT KNOW IF I COULD CONTINUE IN THE MARRIAGE

I did not know if I could continue in the marriage. Kent provided the guidance I needed to work toward a resolution, and the understanding if it does not work. It was worth the effort to try.

Kent was unbiased, down to earth, compassionate, commanded a knowledge of the materials and method given his years of experience.

I gained insight into programs, theories, and face the realities of staying married vs. divorce. I am attempting to remove detachment and create a new, stronger bond. The therapy provided my wife with a better understanding of where I am based on the support of Kent and the application of his knowledge. This will help both me and my wife understand how to proceed to work on necessary changes to how we think and act upon the issues we have.
